According to the novel of Ferenc Shanta
In early December, the Moscow State Historical and Ethnographic Theater will host the world premiere - the production of the novel by Ferenc Shanta "The Fifth Seal". This novel of the Hungarian writer had only a cinematic fate: the film "The Fifth Seal" became a major cultural event of the late 70's. On the stage, he will appear for the first time.
Artistic director of the theater Mikhail Mizyukov himself performed a dramatization of this large-scale philosophical work, offering the theater an existential parable that has a real historical basis. This is an eternal and timeless story about the need for moral choice, which sooner or later comes before any person, regardless of nationality and historical circumstances.
The action of this drama occurs in 1944 in Hungary, engulfed by fascist terror. Heroes of drama are the most ordinary people, among them are carpenter, watchmaker, bookseller. Every evening, at the end of their work day, they come to the inn to a long-time friend, innkeeper Bela - to drink a glass of wine with old friends and discuss the news. They are quite peaceful people, they just want to live, not interfering with anyone and not interfering in politics, live, work and feed their families, preserving the well-being of their loved ones in the hard years of the Second World War. However, from their simple worldly conversations, sharp philosophical themes grow on their own - about God, the highest truth, decency, dignity and conscience. And one day the question of what to prefer - slavery or tyranny, self-respect or survival at all costs - deprived everyone of their peace, forcing them to plunge into the most hidden corners of their souls in search of an answer. And the real life did not hesitate to intervene - putting them all in a cruel situation, demanding from each firm choice between honor and meanness.
Yes, there are times in the life of society when a "neutral" existence becomes impossible. And the person is checked on a high moral score. To think about this and calls us "The Fifth Seal" - the audience of which, united with the actors in the enclosed space of the scene, become direct participants in this tense philosophical debate.
