For the production of Jean-Baptiste Moliere's comedy School of Wives, the theater took a translation by Dmitry Bykov, the most talented poet and publicist of our time. The text created by D. Bykov not only makes the poetic vocabulary of the 17th century accessible to us, but also in its brilliant style reveals the entire depth of the psychology of Moliere's characters, hidden behind the outward simplicity of the plot and bravura humor.
The wealthy Mr. Arnolf, who has apparently spent a stormy youth, finally decides to marry. In order not to become a cuckold, he "raises" his future wife from a poor girl in a monastery, relying on her purity, naivety and ingenuousness. Having settled young Agnes in the house opposite under the supervision of servants, he suddenly discovers that some young dandy in his absence communicates with the girl, kisses her hands and says different words.
This is where the tangle of real passions, tricks of plot moves and sad predeterminations of fate is tied.
A lofty comedy with a deep meaning ... Moliere said that
"... to make decent people laugh is not an easy task ...", but still managed "... to take a closer look at the funny features in a person and show them ... interesting."
The premiere will take place on April 17 and 18, 2021.
