The director of the play, Alexander Petrov, in an interview with Infoscope magazine, speaks of the nonrandom choice of the Carroll tale: “Our time has come to resemble Victorian England very much: today it is just as tough, cynical, unpromising, no-fly ... And all this is opposed to only one thing - the girl Alice , childhood as such: polite, well-mannered, friendly, trusting. This is a great value - and this is an archetype that enters into an aggressive external environment, where everyone around is rude, scoffed, angry ... ”

The well-known Moscow composer Ephraim Podgayts created, following Carroll, a bizarre world with causal connections turned inside out, a world that is always opened from unexpected directions by such keys as nonsense, paradox, and absurdity. Realizing Alice's rampant fantasy adventures is as difficult as capturing the ghostly smile of a Cheshire Cat melting in the air. In the same way that Carroll’s book is loved by readers of all ages, the opera in 11 chess moves with one interval “Alice through the Looking Glass” directed by Alexander Petrov is addressed to children and adolescents, and their parents. The story of the girl Alice, who dared to look on the other side of the mirror and found herself in the mysterious and alluring world of the Looking Glass, of course, asks for the stage of the theater "Looking Glass". Indeed, the name of the theater in 1987 was invented by its creators - artistic director Alexander Petrov and chief conductor Pavel Bubelnikov - not without the influence of Lewis Carroll's paradoxical philosophy.

And 10 years ago after a major overhaul of the Looking Glass building, the interiors of the lobby and the audience foyer were enriched with bizarre fantasies on the themes of Carroll's tales of Alice. The design group “Staircase” took as a basis filigree book illustrations by Ksenia Lavrova to Carroll's fabulous dilogy. Therefore, for the audience who will come to the play “Alice Through the Looking Glass”, the art world of Carroll's metamorphoses comes to life as soon as they cross the threshold of the theater and see on the wall strange clocks with a very wayward mirror-like time, mirrors with stained glass stickers - numerous Carroll characters, entrance to the wardrobe in the form of a stylized round rabbit hole with intricate collages, and under the legs - a chess floor with cages - "lawns" of green grass.
