The play "Farewell to paper" is actually not one, but two stories - the general and the private. Private can be easily deduced from the name: Grishkovets reflects on how electronic information carriers displace paper. The general is not so obvious. The author speaks of time, of emptiness and of the fact that technological progress for each individual human being is an approximation to non-being, because progress comes with time. And time is the realization of non-existence. Therefore, Grishkovets begins the story with the words "never" and "forever" - and they then respond with a memory of childhood fear of blackness in the slot of the mailbox, and the visible blackness that can be seen in the finale behind the line of doors opening simultaneously behind Grishkovets's back. Yes, and the humble, silent withdrawal of the hero at the end of the performance carries in itself something more than just parting with the paper.
Farewell to paper is a farewell to manuscripts, letters, tourist maps in hand, after all, with books. This is the realization of the simple fact that in our everyday life there is no longer only many words - like the tasty and sonorous word "blot" - but also, for example, the important concept of "handwriting", because handwriting is becoming less and less - and Therefore, the traditional signs of human individuality are disappearing. Evgeny Grishkovets can not refuse the obvious ability to suddenly make a convex, important, important, but in the conventional conveniences from which no one comes and will never come to mind, to see, so to speak, the global humanitarian problem.
He spends the whole play near the desk, where the computer brought by him is next to an old typewriter and other attributes of the "paper" era. The doors of this large cabinet (the artist of the play - Larisa Lomakina) are flung open to the birch grove (followed by a story about Novgorod birch bark letters), then to a bookcase, then to a corridor where a pile of paper or a mailbox hangs. But the attractiveness of the performance, of course, is not in the illustrations, but, as before, in the intonation of Grishkovets himself. Like no other, he still knows how to pick up something sad and tender, almost intimate, childish, pull this thing out for everyone - but not to mock, shame or pity, but only so that people see themselves Themselves against the background of the common fate of contemporaries.
(Roman Dolzhansky)

How much in our life was associated with notes, letters, telegrams!

We carefully store one of the notebooks of the first-grade son, the letters of the groom from the army and the wife from the hospital.

What a pity that very soon even friends will not recognize each other's handwriting! We are still now, and in the future we will increasingly use a computer.

Eugene Grishkovets sincerely and confidently reflects on how the modern world has changed. It's sad to part with even such a trifle as a blotter from a school notebook.

Writing typewriters became unnecessary, the postage stamps, fountain pens and pen drawers were gone.

Few people in our time remember birch bark letters, the letters on which our ancestors wrote. Even many books began to be read only on electronic media.

The memory of the past is important for each of us. With light sadness and nostalgia I want to remember school notebooks and textbooks, institute notebooks and abstracts, paper geographic maps. They were an important part of our lives.

We regret the past. Dear memories, how they warm the soul ...
