Review

The play based on Gogol's stories included in the collection Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka: Sorochinskaya Fair, May Night, or the Drowned Woman, Christmas Eve, Enchanted Place is an interweaving of various images and heroes, nationalities and traditions , hopes and expectations, merging together in anticipation of the main event - the Sorochinsk fair. But this fair cannot take place in any way, the Bridegroom cannot meet the Bride in any way, the merchants spread their wares, and the main character and the narrator cannot find the demon that always interferes with him, cannot start dancing.

An enchanted place filled with Gogol's mysticism and poetry, uniting not only heroes, but also Russian and Ukrainian languages and traditions. After all, the name of Gogol is acquiring a special meaning today in the context of relations between our countries.

Internal barriers, disorder in the soul - this is a consequence of what is happening in the world - a long pandemic, a common human ghetto, not only on a national scale, but wider, wider ... Only Gogol can see this situation. Why he? It seemed to me that he was always in this state. A very heavy person, very gloomy, driving himself constantly and staying in some kind of inner confinement, in a mental cage.

On the other hand, I miss Ukraine for a long time and very much, I miss Little Russia, in which I grew up. Today it is something separate and even aggressive towards us, which confuses me extremely. I wanted to remember my Little Russia, not today, but the one it was during my childhood. And it is very closely connected with "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka" - Ukraine untouched by conflicts, money and wars, a completely different country, the Ukraine of my childhood.

Both the global situation and my personal nostalgia - it all boiled down to this "Dikanka". When I started thinking about her, I realized that this is not just literature, but a real bacchanalia, perfectly conveying what is happening with a person today. Bacchanalia, which does not obey any laws, except, perhaps, higher ones. But how will it turn out? What is she? Will I be able to explain why at the end, after a mystical story connected with devils, I include the author's digression in the play: “Where are you, my dears? Where have you disappeared? .. ”Something incomprehensible, crazy, insane, but also deep for the author. An extremely interesting frenzy that has come so well to our court today.
