“ Since the time of the story "Childhood" in the 6th grade, Gorky for me was a boring and not at all catchy writer. But I went to the play "At the Bottom" with curiosity. I already knew that the director Y. Grymov knows how to stage classics in such a way that the boring becomes interesting, the philosophical becomes accessible, and the protracted becomes dynamic. Expectations came true 100%! The modern inhabitants of Rublevka speak in the language of Gorky, and you would never think that the play was written in 1902. Despite branded items and rich surroundings, people's problems have changed little. Someone is looking for love, who is the truth, someone is already holding the "bottom" with a stranglehold. The actors play great! Each has created a unique image. Vasilisa, Vaska Ashes, Actor seemed especially bright to me. I read reviews - many consider Luka in the play as a negative hero. And he seemed pretty to me. In a difficult situation, he is always there, finds encouraging words, calls on a person to be human. This is important! Music perfectly complements what is happening on stage. I liked the performance and will be understandable to high school students when studying the work. Theater "Modern", in my opinion, is doing a very important job - it reveals the world of classical literature for young people, and this is very valuable. And yes ... I have not read the play, but now I will probably read it ...
“ For 1 hour 40 minutes, Yuri Grymov portrayed an amazing and nagging piercing version of "At the Bottom". The performance is bright in style. The darkened space of the scene flashes with juicy spots, highlighting the main thing at this particular moment. Yes, we already know this technique, this kind of directorial style, but again and again we are surprised at the effect when the picture is instantly recorded in memory and then lives there for a long time, appearing before our eyes again and again. So what is unexpected in this performance? The idea of timelessness is unexpected. Heroes, as was announced before the start of the performance, are our contemporaries. Stylish clothes, expensive accessories, leather furniture, waiters offering food and drinks. All this would seem to be confusing, and the authors even insured themselves by making plates with the names of the heroes, but these fears are superfluous. And it’s even amazing how the original author’s text is harmonious and absolutely natural in relation to modern realities! From the first minutes it’s clear who is who. From the very first minutes, my heart breaks with sympathy and sympathy for everyone. I don’t even know if I ever had such a strong sympathy for each of the heroes of this play .. Why? Why did I just now want to hug everyone? Is it only because they are outwardly the same as me with these fashionable clothes and phones? After all, in fact, only the attributes change, and people from year to year, from century to century live all the same, they also love, suffer and die. Or because the creators of the performance managed to highlight the main thing in each, and this main thing was not that they all fell so low that they were “at the bottom” of society, but that even at the bottom they are all people, inside each of Which own tragedy and own universe? A person cowering in pain and loneliness is equally vulnerable both on the dirty basement floor and on a leather sofa. And there is no difference than drowning despair with elite alcohol or the cheapest vodka, if after a minute you still have a wasteland-noose ... And, perhaps, against the background of towers pumping oil and pleasures like massage, this pain is even more acute, because it is more difficult to accept and explain .. Even during the nods, I tried to determine for myself which of the characters hooked the most? Satin (Vladimir Levashev) with his aristocracy and the brightest facial expressions, whose monologue struck to goosebumps? Or Ashes (Victor Potapeshkin)? Whose sarcasm was so quickly replaced by pure and almost childish naivety, that I wanted to save him first of all, and maybe Vasilisa (Nadezhda Menshova)? After all, it was she who caused the strongest negative emotions? And this despite the fact that I perfectly understood the reason for all her words and actions. Or Actor (Konstantin Konushkin)? With his vulnerability and naive belief in what can still be changed? However, honestly, all the same, Luka (Alexander Tolmachev). That's what I admired every minute of his stay on stage! Bravo! The image is ambiguous, but how beautiful in essence! And the finale ... In the finale, I almost prayed that they would at least slightly tighten it, to prolong, extend this admiration for what is happening on the stage, otherwise the performance passed so swiftly that I desperately wanted it to be just the end of the first act ... go to the theater! Perhaps you, like me, when you return home, re-read the play again, already seeing the heroes exactly as they saw him in the Modern Theater
“ I am not a fan of M. Gorky's creative work, I will say more “At the bottom” I never loved, because I consider it a very hard work. I want to say thank you to Yury Grymov, because in order to put such a work in such an unusual form and to save the text of the original source, you must have tremendous talent and courage. I like it. See for sure. There is something to discuss after the performance. Luka is beautiful, according to the Prince there are questions. Once again, thank you all, participated in the production for the pleasure of viewing.
