All of Blok's work is characterized by a paradoxical combination of the mystical and the everyday, the aloof and the everyday in general. First, the musicality of Blok's poems lulls the audience, plunges it into a kind of somnambulistic sleep, then intonations of desperate gypsy songs that grab the soul of gypsy appear in his works. And the poem "The Twelve", a vivid and generally misunderstood work that caused controversy throughout the 20th century, stands completely apart in Russian literature of the Silver Age. The tragedy of Blok - a poet and a person - is that he could not symbolically live his gift, because this gift was not humanly huge. Alexander Blok lived and worked at the turn of two worlds and became the last great poet of old, pre-October Russia.
