The play of the French playwright XVIII Pierre Marivo is part of his dystopia, dedicated to the freedom and vicissitudes of fate that accompany its search and upholding. According to the plot, two masters and two of their servants are shipwrecked and find themselves on an island inhabited by the descendants of ancient Athenian slaves who no longer want to endure violence against themselves. The servants are invited to try on the roles of masters in order to get rid of excess pride. This transformation leads to unexpected consequences.
Marivo, who, on the one hand, inherited the Italian comedy of masks, and on the other, stepped into modern times with his value of human personality, writes the play rather sharp and modern. It does not soften, but aggravates the problems associated with hierarchies within society and human attempts to fight them.
The play was first staged in 1725 in Paris by Comedy Italien, then already in 1939 she got into the Comedy Frances repertoire, and in the 2000s she was staged in Piccolo di Milano by Giorgio Strehler. The production was brought to Moscow by the Chekhov Festival, and it was almost a political statement, and not just an old costume drama. In the Russian theater, Marivo's play was not staged.
The debut work of the young director Anastasia Knyazeva on the professional stage is based on the beautifully written, light but serious play by Marivo, which raised the question of the essence of human stay in society and the roles that accompany it, and which are relevant in our time.
