Ilyin, the protagonist of the play comes to Leningrad, where he spent his youth. He remembers Tamara, the first love that wrote him letters throughout the war.

Late in the evening he decides to visit her, already a middle-aged woman. Tamara works in a factory, educates her nephew, she never married.

Deceiving each other, she says that her happiness is in the work, and he wants her to seem like a big boss. Although working as a driver, he lives in the North.
