Lyric comedy by Semyon Zlotnikov directed by Joseph Reichelgauz
returns to the stage of the theater "School of modern play"
The play by Semyon Zlotnikov, written by him 30 years ago and first staged in 1989 by Joseph Reichelgauz, was the beginning of the life of the new theater “School of the modern play”. Since then, the School of Modern Play has become one of the most popular theaters in Moscow, and Zlotnikov’s comedy has become a classic example of Russian drama. Today it is staged throughout Russia, as well as abroad: in America, Japan, Israel, Estonia ...
The first production of Joseph Reichelgauz with Albert Filozov and Lyubov Polishchuk, fortunately, is immortalized on the TV screen. However, the further life of the performance on the stage of the School turned out to be interesting, rich and even dramatic. The departed Love Polishchuk was replaced by Irina Alferova. Heroes noticeably matured. And then a new version appeared - with spectacular two-level decorations by Alexei Tregubov, dances, modern vocabulary and artists of another generation - Amalia Mordvinova and Victor Verzhbitsky. And then - more and more new men began to come to new women. And once it happened that Said Bagov became a man, and the famous shocking ballerina Anastasia Volochkova, who suddenly turned out to be a remarkable dramatic artist, became a woman. But the good old play could not stand this experiment. After three shows, the performance was closed.
Time has passed. After wandering around other people's venues (the theater survived the fire in 2013), the School of the Modern Play returned to its historic building on Trubnaya Square. And it became clear: without “A man came to a woman,” the theater’s repertoire seems incomplete. There are performances that play a key role in the fate of the theater.
Joseph Reichelgauz decided to restore and breathe new life into the play with which the history of the theater began:
- I met an actress - Maria Poroshina - who turned out to be a perfectly perfect heroine of the play. When we started rehearsing, it seemed that time had turned back: accuracy, professionalism, organicness - all this reminded me of a rehearsal with Any Polishchuk. The new version will be different from previous ones. If earlier we tried to hold on to the play, its realities, attributes to this day - modernized the text, actualized some details of the life of the characters, now I want to achieve the opposite effect - a retro feeling. Yes, this is not happening today, but about 40 years ago, when people spoke like that, when they felt that way, when their relationship was built that way. Is there anything nostalgic for this? Unlikely. Indeed, when we watch The Irony of Fate today, we do not perceive this film as longing for the past. But there is no need to update this film, because it is a classic. So “A man came to a woman” - a classic. That is how we are going to play it.
Premiered on October 8 and November 7 at the Hermitage.
