Story

"Kings" is a play based on the tragedy of Alexander Pushkin "Boris Godunov" and the dramatic poem by Sergei Yesenin "Pugachev".

The author's play by Mikhail Levitin, connecting the two centuries of Russian history, is the most difficult, but at the same time the most vivid of their pages, illuminated by the light of the great poetry of Pushkin and Yesenin. Without exaggeration, we can say that for each of these geniuses, the theme of the relationship between the poet and the people was one of the most important in their work. It is not for nothing that these great tragedies were born - "Boris Godunov" and "Pugachev", which for many decades have been exciting to viewers and readers.

Fury of life in these plays. The frenzy of poetry. Pushkin and Yesenin penetrate where it is impossible to penetrate an ordinary person. But their design is more than just stories about kings and riots, more than a story about the "Russian State".

The performance of the Hermitage Theater is both a proof and a reminder of how our history is actually written, by whom it is created. Not strong in this world, not "kings" and power, but also not by historians in dusty offices. A living, truly touching of souls and hearts History belongs to the pen of poets, their genius and inspiration.

History does not tolerate only epic, the language of "high tragedy." Once again emphasizing this and following the line of a unique and original author's theater, the creators of the play (partly paying tribute to the legendary performance of the Taganka Theater "Pugachev" staged by Yuri Lyubimov) introduce into the fabric of the work not only the texts of tragedies, but - in contrast to them - comic interludes one of the greatest Soviet playwrights Nikolai Erdman.

This performance is a step towards understanding the eternal dialogue between the poet and the authorities. A step towards national history and understanding of what unites such dissimilar epochs.

This performance is an uninterrupted movement from today to tomorrow. And how to do without it on the way without Theater and Poetry?
